Esta obra se ocupa de las transformaciones en los modos de dominación colonial y resistencia étnica durante el siglo XVIII en la provincia de Chayanta, una zona habitada predominantemente por comunidades indígenas en lo que hoy es el norte de Potosí, Bolivia. Es un estudio innovador y riguroso de historia de los grupos subalternos que, combinando formas narrativas y analíticas de escritura, echa luz sobre la cultura política que permitió traducir el descontento de los pueblos andinos en prácticas colectivas que subvirtieron las representaciones y los mecanismos de poder coloniales.
