Como todas las historias de los pueblos antiguos, la de los hindúes no ha sido fácil de determinar cronológicamente. La importancia de este primer tomo de la Historia de la India de Romila Thapar radica en que, aplicando métodos modernos de análisis, nos ofrece una visión más objetiva de cuándo y cómo se fue conformando este país. Este recorrido abarca de los años 3000 a.C, con las culturas preindoeuropeas, a 1526 d.C., cuando inicia el contacto con los musulmanes.

Durante el siglo XX tres generaciones de españoles han vivido grandes cambios: las generaciones de los años treinta, sesenta y noventa, y cada una guarda su particular memoria y su juicio del tiempo vivido.
